What Were You Really Working For?
Every business owner started somewhere with a picture in their head of what success would look like. Maybe it was paying off the house. Maybe it was taking your family on a real vacation without checking your phone every ten minutes. Maybe it was just having enough breathing room that money wasn't an issue or the first thing on your mind every morning only you know what lit the original fire.
Remember the day you signed the papers, turned the key, or opened the doors for the first time?
What was the dream back then?
Now look at where you are today.
Some Honest Questions Worth Asking
If you're being honest with yourself:
1. Is your business delivering the profit potential you deserve?
2. Do your employees' actions deliver the results required for the return you expect?
3. Are you satisfied with your current cash flow and your collection effectiveness?
4. Do your systems, processes, and procedures alert you in real time when and where you’re bleeding cash?
5. Is your company healthy enough to secure financing if you needed it?
6. Could your business operate effectively for 90 days without your direct involvement? What about a week?
7. Do you have a real plan for the unexpected — a health scare, a downturn, a key employee walking out?
And a few more to think about:
8. Do you ever catch yourself wondering where all the money actually goes?
9. Are you open to exploring, discovering and closing any costly gaps within your strategic business plan?
10. Is running the business quietly costing you your health, your family time, or your peace of mind?
11. Are their any ownership or generational concerns in the back of your mind that you keep putting off ?
12. Are you thinking about selling your business or transitioning ownership?
13. Is your aim to continue growing the business? Or is your aim to become more efficient and profitable where you are?
14. Would you agree there are things about your business you don't know yet, simply because nobody has looked closely enough to find them?
What This Means for You
If your answers to questions 1 through 7 are no, or your answers to questions 8 through 14 are yes, that's not a failure. It's a signal. These are some of the most common questions and challenges small business owners face, whether they've been in business two years or twenty.
You didn't start this business to feel stuck in it. Financial security, a home you're proud of, real time with your family, and the independence to run your life on your own terms — that's the dream you were building toward. If your business is getting in the way of that instead of building it, something needs to change.
